Police: Husband shoots wife, kills himself after standoff in NJ

- EDGEWATER PARK, N.J. (AP/WTXF) -- Authorities say a man who shot and wounded his wife at their southern New Jersey home kept police at bay for several hours before he fatally shot himself.

The standoff at the Edgewater Park home began around 1 a.m. Wednesday on the 200 block of Roosevelt Avenue.

Officers soon determined that the man, 57-year-old Gregory Martin, had shot his wife, 46-year-old Michelle Moses-Martin. But Martin refused to leave the home and the standoff continued for about three hours.

Martin's body was found in the home. Moses-Martin underwent surgery and is at Cooper University Hospital in critical but stable condition. Further details on her injuries were not disclosed.

According to officials, Martin was retired from the New Jersey Department of Corrections. He was employed by the township as a school crossing guard.

It's not yet known what sparked the shootings. Authorities declined further comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
