VP Biden to attend memorial service for fallen Wilmington firefighters

A memorial service will be held Saturday in honor of Wilmington firefighters Lt. Christopher Leach and Jerry Fickes.

Vice President Biden will be in attendance with doors at the Chase Center in Wilmington expected to open for the public at 11:00 a.m.

Attendance is expected to be over 5,000 with overflow rooms in the Chase Center made available.

Leach and Fickes died last weekend in a Wilmington house fire that injured four other firefighters.

27 year old Beatriz Fana-Ruiz of 1927 Lakeview Road has been arrested and charged in the incident that took place on September 24. She was temporarily living at the home.

Fana-Ruiz is charged with two counts of murder in the first degree, for the deaths of Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes, four counts of assault in the second degree, for the injuries to Lt. John Cawthray, Senior Firefighter Ardythe Hope, Senior Firefighter Terence Tate, and Firefighter Brad Speakman, one count of first degree arson, and seven counts of reckless endangering in the first degree.
