WATCH: Suspects smash Wawa registers, steal cigarettes

Philadelphia Police say they are looking for a man and woman who were caught on video smashing cash registers and making off with cash at a Wawa in Somerton early morning.

The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. Monday morning at the Wawa located at 14101 Bustleton Avenue.

Surveillance video captured the moment two suspects entered the store, as the male suspect, armed with a hammer, asked the clerk to move out of the way.

The male suspect then began hitting the cash registers with the hammer, while the female suspect began grabbing cartons of cigarettes and putting them in a trash bag.

Police now say this may not be the first time the bandits have done this. This Wawa at Richmond and Allegheny was held up by two suspects carrying a hammer. According to police, a Wawa out on the main line in Lower Merion was also robbed again by a suspect with a hammer in hand.

Detectives believe the other two robberies are connected. The robbers may be  selling the cigarettes also called "loosies" on the street for a sizeable return of up to $20 a pack.

Both suspects fled the store with numerous cartons of cigarettes, and were last seen heading north on Philmont Avenue toward Street Road.

Cartons of cigarettes cost from $80 to $100 a carton at wawa in the philadelphia area.

The male suspect has been described as white or Hispanic, standing 6'0" with a medium build.

The female suspect has been described as a white female in her mid-30s.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspects is asked to contact police.
