Man in custody after allegedly pointing gun at police leading to barricade

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) Night fell as police safely brought a barricade situation in North Philly to an end. In custody is a man about 47 years old who police say was already known to them.

SkyFOX flew over the area of 16th and Allegheny just after six Friday evening. Officers spotted the suspect in a stolen gray SUV and tried to pull him over. They say the man then assaulted an officer as he got out of the car and fled.

"The driver quickly exited the vehicle and violently shoved the officer knocking her off her balance," said Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan with Philadelphia Police. That started a foot chase south on 16th Street. Police say two officers chasing the suspect saw him pull a gun from his waist. They ordered him to drop it but say he then pointed the gun at them.

"One officer did discharge at that point three times at the male but did not strike him. The other officer did not fire due to the fact that it's quite crowded out here," said Chief Inspector Sullivan.

The suspect ran into an apartment building on the 3100 block of 16th Street where police say he forced himself into someone's first floor unit and barricaded himself inside. Police evacuated the building and began negotiating with the suspect before SWAT rushed in.
"He forced his way in and took refuge on his own inside the first floor apartment and peacefully surrendered upon the entry of SWAT," said Chief Inspector Sullivan.
Police say the weapon the suspect had was a replica of a Glock which is what police carry. No one was hurt.
