Man who drowned while trying to rescue dog identified

Authorities have identified a man who drowned in a northeast Philadelphia creek after jumping in to try to save his dog.

The victim is Alexander Ross. He has been identified as both 67 and 68 years old.

Police say the man was walking his dog along Pennypack Creek in the Fox Chase section Monday when the animal either jumped or fell into the water.

Police said the man then went into the water to try to save the dog but was swept away by the current.

The marine unit was called in to help recover the body. Police later found the dog safe near the man's car.
