Millbourne fire company to close after 110 years of service

Sirens will go silent Tuesday night in the Borough of Millbourne after 110 years of service.

76-year-old Joe Artmont Sr. is still an active member. He served as the Millbourne fire chief for nearly 40 years. Before heading the job down to his son years ago.

"We've protected the community together. We volunteered because we love it. No other reason for it," Joe Artmont Jr. said.

Sadly, the number of volunteers is down. The station even went out of service on Sept. 18 for safety reasons.

Artmont says the department has tried to come back online but claims borough officials aren't supporting them. The acting borough manager tells FOX 29 ongoing negotiations were tabled in Feb. because of several concerns related to manpower, response time and money.

This truck hasn't gone out on a service call since Sept. 12 and on Wednesday it will be for sale.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce called the borough hall asking to speak Millbourne Mayor Thomas Kramer and stopped by his home, but there was no answer.
