BOISE, ID (WTXF) - A father is praising his son for his swift, brave, and heroic actions after he suffered horrific injuries caused by a boulder.
On August 17, David Finlayson and his son Charlie from Eagle, Idaho were camping at Ship Lake Island in Idaho when a boulder rolled off the mountainside.
It struck David and broke his back, left heel, and left arm.
"Charlie was right on top of things. He got me lowered down to the ground and got the first aid kit; lowered to me. Once I got it taped up, I figured we were going to be OK at some point,” David said.
"Well … he's been climbing and backpacking with me for years and he knew a lot of the important things. Like, keeping somebody hydrated that's injured, getting the bleeding stopped. My leg was opened up, all the way to the bone.”
“Ran down to get the sleeping bags and the food and water,” said 13-year-old Charlie.
According to David, Charlie remained calm and took care of his dad for two-and-a-half days.
The two were about a mile from their camp, and 13 miles from the trailhead.
Charlie says that he prayed a lot and eventually he went off on his own, with a note penned from David. He eventually found other campers who got help for David.
"I got my motto, 'stay calm,' from my dad and scouts,” Charlie said.
