INDEPENDENCE, MO (WTXF) - A Missouri father is speaking out after a harrowing kidnapping attempt involving his 3-year-old son.
It all happened when William Beddow was sitting on his porch with family. Suddenly, a man raced over from across the street.
“He just had this stare in his eyes from all the way over there. He didn't take his eyes off Bentley the entire time he was walking over here,” Beddow said.
That’s when Beddow says that 69-year-old James Lewis snatched Beddow’s 3-year-old son Bentley’s arms and refused to let go.
Beddow was shocked, but then grabbed the man’s shirt and shouted for him to let go.
“I told him 'let go of my son or I'm going to knock you out.' He just looked at me with this far look, he was out there. I just hit him with my elbow and dropped him.”
Then family members stepped in, grabbing Bentley as Beddow called 911, Lewis laying on the porch.
Then, just minutes later, Lewis got up and tried to get Bentley again. Beddow says the look in his eyes was just haunting.
“Just emptiness. Dark stare,” he said.
According to neighbors, Lewis lives in the neighborhood. He’s been seen wandering around before, but Beddow says that he didn’t recognize him.
He also says that he hopes Lewis learned his lesson.
“It's the wrong house to mess with. My kids are the wrong kids to try to take.”
