HOUSTON, TX - A police investigation underway in Houston after a homeless man looking for cans in a dumpster made a terrible discovery Thursday morning.
It came as a gruesome surprise.
A man who was rummaging through the trash, looking for cans inside this dumpster in southeast Houston says he was shocked when he found a plastic bag with a baby's body inside.
"I just opened up the bag and the baby fell out. It scared me."
Houston Police say they got the call around 10 Thursday morning.
The man reported that while he was looking for cans at the Cuney apartment complex on Truxillo, he came across a plastic bag.
Police say the plastic bag had a newborn baby's body inside... with the umbilical cord still attached.
"Anybody with any information please feel free to contact. This is a child who doesn’t make a decision on their life and nobody deserves to be thrown in the trash can and thrown this way,” Anthony Turner with Houston Police said.
Police weren't able to reveal whether the baby is a boy or a girl and they are investigating how long the body has been there.
Authorities say they are leaving no stone unturned and are canvassing the area for witnesses and to see whether surveillance video is available.
They're also asking for the public's help.
"I just imagine if this was my family, one of my children or my soon to be newborn so that's why I can reiterate that anybody that has any information please come forward and let us know so they can bring this person to justice,” Turner said.
Authorities have not yet concluded how the newborn died.
The medical examiner was called to the scene and will determine whether the baby was stillborn or put into the dumpster while still alive.
