OAKLAND, CA- One church in Oakland could face hefty fines for its gospel music.
The city of Oakland sent a letter to the Pleasant Grove Baptist church threatening a $3,500 nuisance fee, plus $500 a day unless it toned down its choir practice.
Church pastors say the real issue is gentrification.
The church is in West Oakland, home to old Victorian homes being snapped up by affluent tech workers.
Church members say the complaints are coming from new people moving into the neighborhood.
"After 10, 11 o'clock at night. And in one case, the letter cited up to two in the morning," said Karen Boyd, an Oakland spokeswoman.
The church says they are going to fight the claims, and are even talking about organizing outdoor services so the entire community can enjoy the music.
Meanwhile, another group of people were ticketed for drumming outside their home after a neighbor called the cops.
They say they've been drumming for years and never had an issue until recently.
