(INSIDE EDITION)- An act of kindness quickly became a nightmare when an 18-year-old Oklahoma woman was reportedly shot and killed by the hitchhiker she picked up on the side of the road, police said.
Caylee Massey and a man were traveling overnight from Oklahoma City about 90 miles across state to Canton when they reportedly picked up a man looking for a ride, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations.
The man hitched a ride with pair in Oklahoma City and about two miles east of Canton, he fatally shot Massey, who was also a passenger in the car, before fleeing, police said.
The driver rushed to the Canton Police Department to get help, but it was too late and Massey could not be saved.
It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.
Investigators named Christopher Blake Scruggs, 23, as a person of interest in the case and said he is also wanted for questioning in a violent attack in Logan County.
“I cannot believe something so awful has happened to such a sweet, loving girl,” one friend wrote on Instagram. “Caylee was one of the brightest people with a genuine heart.”
Anyone with information about Sruggs’ whereabouts is asked to call the OSBI hotline at 1-800-522-8017.
