BOSTON, MA - A 5-year-old girl walked out of her Boston public school during school hours and the situation is now raising awareness about security issues at the school.
According to WFXT, Raine Givens walked out of school in the middle of the day.
The news station reports that she was in her gym class when she says her teacher asked her to step out of the classroom. She did more than that – she left the school entirely.
“Then I went to the park. Then I went home,” she told WFXT.
“This is unacceptable. Because this just shows me that the school doesn't pay attention to the kids,” Raine’s mom Candace Phillips said to WFXT. “It was very cold outside without a coat, without nobody watching her. There's people sitting in the park drinking and doing a whole bunch.”
Both sides are in agreement that Raine walked away from the school, but they disagree on how long she was gone.
According to the school, it was only a five minute absence.
However, Raine’s mom and the neighbor who discovered her outside say that it was more like 20 minutes.
WFXT received a statement from Boston Public Schools that said, “It is very disconcerting that this student demonstrated a weakness in the school’s safety procedures.”
WFXT also spoke to Raine, who just wanted to know if she was in trouble. Phillips said no, but she could have been.
“Like I told the principal, I don't feel comfortable her even attending this school. Because y'all don't keep an eye on children,” said Phillips.
