Parents allegedly starved their 4-year-old twins and beat 6-year-old with belt

- Two parents from Florida face child abuse charges after police say they starved their four-year-old twins –a girl and a boy – and beat their six-year-old son.

According to the Daily Mail, 27-year-old Kimberly Haygood and Anthony Jones’ twin boy was found to be so underfed that he allegedly weighed the same as an 11-month-old. They also report that he “looked like a skeleton.”

Detective Megan Buck said that he was taken aback by the state the child was in.

“His body was skin and bones,” he said.

Haygood and Jones are accused of abusing the children at their Sarasota, Florida home according to the Daily Mail.

The media outlet reports that all three children were “extremely malnourished and dehydrated” according to police. Police also say they found scars on the two boys that were consistent with being beaten by a belt.

According to the six-year-old, who police say had multiple “severe” scars; their father would hit the twins when they soiled themselves.

The Daily Mail reports that police were alerted to the alleged abuse by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) after a severely underweight child was admitted to a hospital in St. Petersburg.

Detective Buck said that Haygood explained her bringing in her son after a nearby family member raised concerned over him being “so skinny.”

Haygood claimed to have fed the boy Cheetos and milk due to an alleged aversion to food.

However, according to a skeletal survey, the boy’s intestines were found to be completely empty according to the Daily Mail.

The doctor issuing the health check told police that they believed the child had only been given water, as even milk would leave traces of food residue, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the news outlet, the boy was so malnourished that he was developmentally delayed and could not speak. He also did not have any hair and had a rash due to lack of nutrients.

The boy’s twin sister weighed just 2 pounds more.

Haygood and Jones were reportedly each charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse and two counts of child neglect with great bodily harm. Haygood was charged with an additional count of child neglect and Jones with an additional count of child abuse, according to the Daily Mail.

Currently, the children are in the care of the state.

The mother-of-three is allegedly being held on $50,000 bond and must not contact Jones or the children, the Daily Mail reports. They also say that Jones is being held on $60,000 bond and must not contact his children or any other minors.
