TULSA, OK - A mother and grandfather of four children are in jail after leaving the kids home alone during a fire in Oklahoma.
Krystal Snell, also known as Krystal Penheiro, was arrested Friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma for child neglect. Her father, Lee Snell, is also in custody.
The children ages 1, 2, 5 and 10 made it out of the house safely.
By the time a police officer drove by the house and spotted the fire, the children had run across the street to a neighbor’s for help.
Eventually, all four kids were taken to the hospital to be check out and DHS was called.
The fire didn't destroy the house. But there's quite a bit of smoke and water damage.
For hours, without any luck emergency crews tried to contact their parents.
Their mother came home 3 hours later. She says she can't drive so she had her dad take her to pick up a check.
Looking back, she says would have done things differently.
"I'm glad they got out. I'm glad I got some smart kids to get out,” Penheiro said.
"TFD also passed on the house was kind of hard to get in and out of so the kids were fairly lucky to have survived that,” Brandon Smith, a Tulsa Police officer, said.
When asked if he commended the kids for their actions, Smith said, “Oh absolutely especially when I heard the five year old carried the one year old out."
Penheiro said, "Really shook. I’m scared I'm going to lose my kids and go to jail."
"I should have just took them with me but I wasn't thinking."
Police say it's up to the parents to decide at what age it's ok to leave your children at home alone.
Fire investigators believe a space heater caused the fire.
