(INSIDE EDITION) - A 24-year-old man distraught over his recent break-up sneaked into the bedroom of his college athlete ex-girlfriend and stabbed her and her new boyfriend to death, according to police.
Colin Kingston then turned the knife on himself and committed suicide, authorities said.
Kelsey Annese, 21, and Matthew Hutchinson, 24, were killed in her off-campus room on Sunday morning, police said. Both were students at the State University of New York at Geneseo, near Rochester.
Kingston was a former student at the college, said police officer Jeffrey Szczensiak on Monday, the Associated Press reported.
Kingston used a large knife he had recently purchased, the officer said.
The couple may have been asleep when Kingston entered the woman's room in a house where female basketball players lived. Before he killed himself, Kingston called his father, Szczensiak said.
"All indications are that Mr. Kingston used the same knife to take his own life," the officer said.
Kingston had no criminal history, but had recently made suicidal statements, Szczensiak said.
Annese was a women's basketball team captain and Hutchinson was a men's hockey player. The college suspended the men's and women's basketball games scheduled for Tuesday.
She was remembered by coach Scott Hemer as a selfless team member and an intensely hard worker.
"Kelsey will always be one of my all-time favorite players not because of anything she will have her name next to in the record book, but because of the type of person she was," Hemer said.
Hutchinson had played hockey since he was a child and wanted to be a firefighter after graduating.
For three years, he had volunteered at the Geneseo Fire Department, despite having a heavy schedule of classes and team games.
"Matt did everything at the highest level. He put effort into these things like nobody else," said fire chief Andrew Chanler.
