Junior Olympian dies following battle with rare brain-eating amoeba

- A 14-year-old junior Olympian has died after contracting a disease from a rare amoeba.

Michael Riley was a cross-country runner who, according to the Facebook page Miracle 4 Michael, qualified for the Junior Olympics three times.

According to previous posts on the page, Riley contracted primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) from a rare amoeba, Naegleria fowler, while swimming in a lake.

Following his death, the organizers on the Miracle 4 Michael page wrote in part, “Michael fought a courageous fight over the past week, allowing him to move on to be with the Lord for future heavenly tasks, a beautiful set of wings, and a pair of gold running shoes.”
