Long-time homeless man is reunited with his family after four decades apart

- After 40 years apart, a homeless man was reunited with his sister on Friday, and it’s all thanks to a Good Samaritan and the power of social media.

Isaac, better known as Chico, is 65-years-old.

According to WSVN, he hadn’t seen his sister Lupe Avila or any other family members in nearly 40 years.

On Tuesday, he heard Lupe’s voice via cell phone.

“Can you be ready Friday or Saturday?” Lupe can be heard asking.

Chico says he used to work the printer at the Miami Herald, but he has spent nearly 10 years walking and living on the streets of Downtown Miami, just blocks from his old workplace.

However, he met a woman named Gaby on Tuesday, and the encounter changed his life.

WSVN reports that Gaby recorded a video of Chico through Miracle Messages, a project of the non-profit Netroots Foundation that helps homeless individuals record short videos to their long-lost loved ones. They then send the messages out over social media.

As a result, on Friday night Chico and Lupe reunited for the first time in decades.

“Do you recognize me?” Lupe asked as she hugged her brother.

They embraced tightly for several minutes, cherishing the emotional moment.

“You know how hard it was to get here?” she asked.

Chico even met his nephew for the very first time.

“That’s my youngest, that’s Aaron,” she said as she introduced the two.

“Mucho gusto, glad to meet you,” Chicho said.

Lupe’s other son is named Isaac, just like Chico.

“We were at church today and I prayed to God,” Chico said.

And as he hugged his sister once more, Chico whispered to her, “Don’t let go.”
