Man drowns on Cape Cod during lifeguard test

ORLEANS, Mass. — A 22-year-old man drowned Saturday in a pond near Orleans during a lifeguard tryout.

According to the Orleans Fire chief, the man, Jack Jakubek, went into the water and never resurfaced during the fitness test portion of the tryout.

When other swimmers noticed he was missing, they immediately began searching for him.  Rescuers eventually found him unconscious and tried to resuscitate him.  He was taken in an ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The fire chief said he was a returning lifeguard, auditioning for a summer gig at Cape Cod's Nauset Beach.
