Shooter opens fire at high school prom night leaving two victims hospitalized: Cops

- Two students at a Wisconsin high school were shot this weekend during what was supposed to be the happiest night of their young lives.

A lone gunman showed up to Antigo High School's prom night Saturday armed with a rifle when he opened fire on two students outside the building, police say.

The two victims were rushed to the hospital following the 11 p.m. shooting.

Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller told WSAW that several officers were already on school grounds providing security for the event at the time of the shootings.

One of the officers patrolling the parking lot heard the gunshots and fired at the shooter, who was male, according to an Antigo Police press release.

"At this point, we feel that we have the subject in custody that was a threat. The community is safe at this point," Roller said late Saturday.

By early Sunday morning, the shooter had died, according to reports. He was identified as Jakob Wagner, who graduated from the high school last year.

Roller also addressed the victims, whose conditions were not initially released.

"We’re also looking at the victims and hope everything comes through okay with them," he said.

The prom was shut down immediately following the shootings and all the attendees were escorted home.

Roller said it was unclear what relationship, if any, the shooter had to the victims.

Also unclear as Saturday night became Sunday morning was whether the shooter was a current student at Antigo or if he was ever a student at the high school.
