State trooper killed by gunman at Greyhound bus station, suspect shot dead

- A gunman opened fire at a Virginia Greyhound bus depot Thursday, killing a state trooper and injuring two civilians, authorities said.

The trooper, identified as 37-year-old Chad Dermyer, later died a nearby hospital.

Other troopers fired at the gunman and he later died at the same medical center, authorities said. Two civilians suffered non-life-threatening injuries, CBS affiliate WTVR-TV reported Thursday evening.

Dermyer was shot several times, according to Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. Steven Flaherty.

One of the wounded was an unidentified female track team member at New York's Binghamton University, who was on her way to a meet at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, according to a tweet from Binghamton's athletics department

Witnesses told the station a series of shots rang out at the downtown Richmond bus station about 2:45 p.m.

Leigha Schilling said she was a smoking a cigarette outside the terminal when she heard loud banging noises. She went back inside and saw passengers lying on the ground, she told The Associated Press.

A security guard ordered her to the ground and she ran outside, she said.

"I was terrified. I didn't know what was going on," she said.

Charles Leazott works across the street. He looked out his office window and "saw, no exaggeration, what looked to me to be every police officer in the city of Richmond," he said.

Troopers were conducting drug interdiction training when a man approached one of the troopers and began talking to him, authorities said. The man then pulled out a gun and shot the trooper, according to a statement from the Virginia State Police.

The bus station has been closed as the investigation continues.
