Teen sent home from school for exposed collarbones

- A teen was sent home from school for a dress code violation that one mother called “ridiculous” and now others are weighing in.

Stacie Dunn of Versailles, Kentucky, says that her teen daughter Stephanie Hughes was sent home from school for wearing this outfit:

The problem with Stephanie’s outfit, according to Stacie, was her collarbones being too exposed.

Then, Stephanie attempted to cover up her collarbones with a scarf, and received feedback from administration at her high school who told her that she didn’t tie her scarf the right way.

So steph got sent home from school for giving the principal an attitude when he told her the scarf I brought her to...

Stephanie was then sent home.

“Woodford County High School and the principal have been enforcing a dress code where girls can not show even their collar bones because it may distract their male class mates,” Stacie Dunn wrote on Facebook. “This is ridiculous! Parents are being called away from their important jobs and students are missing important class time because they are showing their collarbones! Something needs to change!”

Buzzfeed reports that the school’s dress code lists what types of shirts are permitted for students to wear – crew neck or button-down – and forbids exposed collarbones.

According to Buzzfeed, the dress code was implemented 10 years ago.

Another student at the school, Maggie Sunseri, created and released a short documentary about the school’s dress code.

And in response to both the documentary and Stephanie’s story, Buzzfeed reports that school principal Rob Akers has issued a promise to work to come up with a revised dress code at the next school board meeting in September.

However, according to Buzzfeed, it may not be put into action until January 2016.
