(FOX NEWS INSIDER) - An Illinois police officer is fighting for his life after responding to an early-morning call that ended in a fatal shootout.
Police say it was about 5:40 a.m. on Saturday when Park Forest Officer Timothy Jones showed up with his fellow officers to investigate the break-in of a vacant home.
“When they found a stolen vehicle at that location and learned that someone was inside the home, they set up a perimeter around the building,” The Chicago Sun-Times reported.
A 21-year-old man later came out of the house and started shooting at the officers.
He was killed when police returned fire.
Officer Jones was shot multiple times, including in the head. Police say he was taken to hospital in critical condition.
