New Castle County, Del. (WTXF) - New Castle County police are investigating after a homeowner shot an alleged intruder.
Chimes ring Tuesday evening throughout this seemingly peaceful neighborhood of Arundel in New Castle County but last night the sound of gunshots broke the silence.
"I was up pretty late last night and I heard like loud noises coming from down the street," said Ellie Lacey.
The Lacey family says around 11:30 Monday night, they heard several things that weren't the norm.
"There were some bright lights going on outside and then the dogs went crazy," said Erin Lacey.
They woke up this morning to learn that a neighbor on Flint Hills Road had shot an alleged intruder around 11:30 the night before. Police say the homeowner was in the garage when he heard a noise inside his home.
He armed himself and went in to find a 20-year-old man hiding in a room. Police say an altercation broke out and the homeowner shot the suspect.
On Tuesday, that man was on his porch but told us he didn't want to talk.
Neighbors can't believe what happened.
“It's very unusual. This is a really quiet neighborhood," said Jeff Lacey.
Police aren't saying what the motive was in the burglary or whether it was robbery or to harm the homeowner but they say it's not a stranger crime.
"It's frightening to think either a bullet in defense of your home or a bullet in commission of a robbery could easily go through one of our houses," said Erin.
A day after it happened neighbors, especially ones with children, were on heightened alert.
"Today, they were home with my eldest who was babysitting and I told her not to let them walk outside just because I didn't know if there would be police activity and I didn't want them to be in the way of anybody," said Erin.
Police say the State Department of Justice is also investigating. No charges have been filed. The suspect is in the hospital in critical condition.
