New Jersey man sentenced to life in prison for the slaying of another man outside a Delaware club

A New Jersey man has been sentenced to life in prison for the slaying of another man outside a Delaware dance club.

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings announced the sentence Friday for 26-year-old Elder Saavedra of Swedesboro, New Jersey.

He was convicted last year of running down another man, 23-year-old Lester Mateo of Penns Grove New Jersey, in the parking lot of the El Nuevo Rodeo club in Bear, Delaware.

Saavedra had been tossed out of the club after getting into a fight with Mateo's friends.

The first-degree murder conviction imposed at last year's trial required imposition of a life sentence.

Saavedra was being held in Pennsylvania on an immigration detainer when Delaware authorities issued a warrant for his arrest.
