One Dead In Police Involved Shooting Near Allentown

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Police in eastern Pennsylvania say they shot and killed a man after he attacked a woman, led them on a car chase and then pushed an officer into a snowbank and began stabbing him.

State police in Bethlehem said 42-year-old Jerome Nichols of Catasaqua barged into a Whitehall Township home and stabbed a woman early Monday. They say he fled in a sport utility vehicle, crashed in Allentown and tried to escape on foot.

Authorities say a state trooper and a Catasaqua officer fired at Nichols after he stabbed another Catasaqua officer several times. The injured officer and the woman both underwent surgery and are expected to recover.

Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin says a preliminary investigation indicates that both officers used proper force.
