Pennsylvania man pleads guilty to aiding wife's suicide

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) -- A Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty to aiding his wife's suicide by putting prescription drugs in her pudding.

Sixty-one-year-old Philip Benight entered the plea Friday in Lancaster County Court. He is scheduled to be sentenced on the second-degree felony charge within 90 days.

Authorities said he gave his Rebecca Benight vanilla pudding mixed with prescription medication on Jan. 22. The two were found unconscious in a parked car at their home and revived, but she died Jan. 30.

Prosecutors earlier said the defendant wasn't charged with homicide because there wasn't sufficient evidence that his wife didn't have the capacity to make decisions. Police said she had repeatedly said her ailments made her want to end her life.

Defense attorney Alan Golding said his client accepts responsibility for his actions.
