Pennsylvania's first medical marijuana practitioner sets up shop in Old City

- Pennsylvania's first marijuana practitioner has set up shop in Old City.

Doctor Matthew Roman, originally from Chestnut Hill, is now known as Pennsylvania's first pot doc. Doctor Roman has been prescribing medical marijuana in Delaware for the past year. Since then he's become a believer in it's qualities.

Although it will be a year or so before doctors will be able to write prescriptions in Pennsylvania, he's already started seeing patients inside his small Old City office to build a baseline medical history.

"I'm seeing people for family care and I am consulting them about the use of marijuana," he explained.

Who can qualify for a medical marijuana card? Patients who have a list of qualifying ailments, including cancer, aids, glaucoma  epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and PTSD.

But smokeable flowered marijuana won't be allowed.  Instead only edible pot products and vaporized concentrates are legal.  And in case you are wondering insurance doesn't cover medical cannabis..

Roman's mission is not only to help patients, but also to teach other doctors treatments, dosage and how to prescribe safely.

"I would really like to teach physicians about it because they don't know where to begin. And it makes it very awkward when they want to discuss it with their patients," he said.
