Police: 3-year-old boy falls from second story window after being left home alone

Police say a 3-year-old boy fell from a second story window after he was left home alone.

"I heard a child crying 'Mom, mom, mom.' Gilda Clinton was relaxing on the couch around 5 p.m. on Memorial Day when she heard a young boy clearly in distress, so she went outside.

Clinton, who has 24 grandchildren, found the 3-year-old boy laying on the ground outside his home and a second floor window smashed out. Police say the child was allegedly left home alone "for hours" and fell out of the window.

"When I picked him up, he held me so tight," Clinton explained.

"They left a child in harms way. They left a 3-year-old in an apartment by himself," Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

Police say the child suffered facial fractures and a concussion when he hit the ground. He was raced to Children's Hospital. Clinton says she knocked on the door repeatedly but no one answered.

"If you got two parents one can stay home while the other one is doing what they doing," Clinton said.

Superintendent Chitwood says Lea Wanhi was at work during the day and her husband, Legbo, claimed he left the home to go look for a job. According to investigators, he didn't return until 11p.m. Police say both were charged with endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering the child. Police and Clinton say the child appeared to have older injuries, too.

"Very, very concerned about the other injuries that possibly could be some sign of former neglect or abuse," Superintendent Chitwood explained.

Youth and Child Services is investigating. Superintendent Chitwood says the old injuries could be burn marks and binding marks on his ankles and legs. The child is in stable condition at CHOP. Both parents are being held on $30,000 bail in the Delaware County Jail.
