Police kill man who critically stabbed 2 children, assaulted 3 women

A man is dead after a violent rampage in Cobbs Creek, Wednesday evening, and police will be back on the scene gathering evidence again Thursday morning.

Police say he first physically assaulted his 15-year-old daughter.

Then, he stabbed his 8-year-old son and 13-year-old family friend multiple times in their throats and chests. They're both in critical condition.

Police got the call at about 7pm about multiple gunshot victims and people screaming in the 6200 block of Hazel Street, so they rushed to the scene with the assumption the man was armed with a gun.

In fact, the hospital where the children were taken couldn't determine right away that the kids weren't shot.

They found the man in the 700 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway, where he'd assaulted two women: one middle aged and the other elderly.

Police confronted him with his hand in a pocket. They told him to take hand out of that pocket and he did so abruptly. That's when up to nine officers discharged their weapons, firing multiple times.

That man, in his 30s, was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Police continued their search and never found a gun, but did find knives.

They're expected back later Thursday to continue gathering evidence.

Later, a police officer guarding the scene had to be rushed to the hospital after the patrol car he was in was hit by a suspected DUI driver.
