Police officer dies after massive heart attack in court

Philadelphia police say it was a massive heart attack that killed Officer Douglas Bamberger.

He collapsed in the Criminal Justice Center on N. 13th and Filbert streets at about 7:40am Tuesday.

Members of the Sheriff's Department and Philadelphia Police Department tried to resituate him until medical personnel arrived and continued those efforts.

They took Officer Bamberger to Hahnemann Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:42am.

Officer Bamberger, 41, was a 16-year veteran of the department assigned to the Court Liaison Unit. He is survived by his wife and two children.

FOX 29 viewer and Fresco user Vincent Weldon sent in video of the police procession for Officer Bamberger entering the Vine Street Expressway (I-676), while authorities stopped traffic.

On his sudden passing, the department wrote, "Commissioner Richard Ross extends his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and Law Enforcement family of Officer Bamberger."
