BURLINGAME (KTVU) -- Hundreds of people greeted Republican front-runner Donald Trump as he made his way Friday to deliver a noon time speech to the state GOP convention being held in Burlingame.
As many as 100 people had already gathered at about 9:30 a.m. ahead of the real estate mogul's convention address, which was held at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport at 1333 Old Bayshore Highway in Burlingame.
As the controversial real estate mogul closes in on securing the party's nomination for president his appearances have drawn protests nationwide, including at a rally in Orange County Thursday night.
More than 10,000 people replied on Facebook that they were either interested or planning on attending protests against Trump outside the convention, where he spoke at a lunch banquet.
His address was over 30 minutes late because of the throng of people protesting outside. Trump and his security entourage entered the hotel from the rear. In the front of the building were a line of protestors, chanting, waving signs and singing.
When Trump began his address, he told the attendees: "That was not the easiest entrance. I felt like I was crossing the border."
Protest organizer Cat Brooks said today, "We're here because Trump has used the largest platform in the world to issue a message of hate and invite violence against marginalized communities."
Brooks said the candidate espouses anti-black, anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant views.
After Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, some held the view that it indicated a post-racial society, according to Brooks, but Trump's rise has demonstrated that belief is false.
"He has exposed what we have always known is alive and here in America and that is a deeply anti-black sentiment," Brooks said.
All three remaining Republican presidential candidates will speak this weekend as the convention continues with a dinner banquet this evening featuring Ohio Gov. John Kasich and a lunch banquet on Saturday with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, recently announced as Cruz's running mate, will host a dinner banquet on Saturday night.
Burlingame police confirmed five arrests shortly before 5 p.m. and that a San Mateo County sheriff's deputy was kicked in face while trying to arrest demonstrator. He was treated and released for minor injuries.
Burlingame police said in a statement on Thursday night that they are preparing for the expected protests against Trump by drawing officers from law enforcement agencies throughout the region.
"Planning efforts are focused on guaranteeing that protesters are freely able to exercise their First Amendment rights, while ensuring the safety of both the protesters as well as those attending various events at
the convention," Burlingame police said.
Trump's rally in Costa Mesa Thursday night drew large protests that resulted in multiple arrests, according to Costa Mesa police.
The stakes are at an all-time high in California as Donald Trump, Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Ohio Governor John Kasich prepare to win much needed support in the Bay Area.
"Depending on what happens in Indiana and the other states that are remaining. This election could be decided in California," says California Republican Party Vice Chairman Harmeet Dhillon.
The California GOP is preparing for one of their highest attended conventions in decades.
The three left standing for the Republican's top spot will address their Californian constituents at the weekend-long event, is being held at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, a place that's surrounded by barricades because once Trump announced he was attending, a large number of protesters also said they would show up.
"We're expecting a decent number of individuals; could be 500 could be 3,000. So we've prepared for that," says Burlingame Police Chief Eric Wollman.
Burlingame police said every department in San Mateo County will be offering officers to help with the convention. The sheriff's department already dispatched the command center to be on hand to provide additional resources.
"I went out and requested mutual aid and asked for help. Just to make sure that we have the numbers to maintain the order that we hope to maintain tomorrow," says Wollman.
Trump and Kasich will speak on Friday. Cruz and his running mate Carly Fiorina will speak on Saturday. The state's GOP says it will also vote on several issues during the convention.
"To extend the term limits for the chairman for either a third term or lifting the term limits altogether. We're also electing the national committee man and national committee woman from California to the RNC," says Dhillon.
