Police search for suspect in arson of political sign

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ (WTXF) Egg Harbor Township police are investigating the arson of an 18-foot Donald Trump campaign sign on Spruce Avenue. It happened the same night protestors were arrested at a Trump rally in Chicago.

John Jay Henry makes no bones about it he supports Donald Trump.

"Friday night, about 1 or 2 in the morning, I get a knock on my door. Police officer came to my door. He said, 'I'm sorry to say somebody set your Trump sign on fire,'" Henry told FOX 29.

"It's freedom of speech. It's not the American flag. The man is not American as far as I'm concerned," said Northfield resident Chris Feeley.

Henry says ever since he put up the sign, strangers have been dropping off American flags. But it's the third time the sign has been the target of vandals.

"I think it's like out of control. You have your opinion but come on that could have turned into a safety hazard and burnt down other things," said Egg Harbor Township resident Shawn Adams.

Some say Donald Trump, especially around Atlantic City where his casino is now closed, is not welcomed. His sign or his presidency.

"Come fix Atlantic city first. Keep fireman, teachers and policeman from getting laid off,' said Egg Harbor Township resident Andrew Parker.

But politics or not. Police say this is a matter of public safety And what if the sign gets damaged a fourth time?

"I will fix this sign as long as Donald Trump is a candidate for President of the United States of America," Henry explained.

John Jay Henry makes no bones about it. He supports Donald Trump. Henry says volunteers have showed up at his home saying they will sleep outside to protect the campaign sign.

Anyone that has information that can assist this investigation is asked to contact the Egg Harbor Township Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau at 609-926-4051.
