Police: Woman assaulted and robbed leaving work in Overbrook

Police say a woman was assaulted and robbed while leaving work in Overbrook.

"I got very angry so then I started kicking him, I punched his stomach and the other grabbed me." The woman captured on surveillance video being attacked and robbed describes fighting back against two men who ran up to her around 7:15 last Friday night. We're not identifying her for her safety.

"Just give me the bag, give me the bag, give me the bag." She says that's what the suspects said as they began punching the 53-year- old victim. She'd just left work in the area of North 68th Street and Haverford Avenue in Overbrook when it happened.

"I was on the phone. I was turning to open my car up and I see somebody running towards me and I thought he was running for the bus. So I moved over and I said excuse me I'm in your way," she says.

The video shows her struggling with one of the men. Moments later you see the other suspect join in when he realizes the victim is putting up a fight.

"You're in shock so you're not scared. Your adrenaline just goes up there and you just are fighting for what's yours." She tries to break away and run for help but eventually the suspects get her purse and take off.

"He had his face covered with a scarf and a hoodie," she says as she describes the suspects. Police say the video also shows the suspects waiting for an hour in a park across the street from where it happened before they struck. Investigators believe she fought back out of shock but never advise doing that.

"We tell people all the time your life is more valuable than any piece of material, money or anything. Just give it up because situations like this can turn ugly," said Lieutenant John Walker with Philadelphia Police.

The suspects got away with several hundred dollars in cash. The victim says it was money she was going to use for Christmas shopping.

The suspects didn't have a weapon. The description is vague but police say one had on a blue hooded Villanova sweatshirt and orange scarf around his face. The other was wearing a black Adidas jacket with a white strip on the sleeves.
