Officer critical but stable; suspect in custody

Folcroft, Pa. (WTXF) A police officer was shot several times Friday as he approached people suspected of smoking marijuana behind an apartment building, prompting a three-hour manhunt that halted a dozen Amtrak trains, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on the 1500 block of Elmwood Avenue in Folcroft near the railroad tracks.

The officer has been identified as 25-year-old Officer Christopher Dorman. Officer Dorman has been with the department for a little more than a year, and also served as a volunteer firefighter in Folcroft.

Officer Dorman was taken to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and airlifted to Penn Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition after being shot multiple times. He is now listed in stable, but critical condition.

Authorities say Dorman sustained seven gunshot wounds. The officer was hit once in the face, once in the groin, once in the leg, and four times in the chest.

According to authorities, a bulletproof vest saved Dorman's life.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Dante Island who goes by Abdul Wahi. Multiple agencies helped with the scene after the officer was shot. SWAT responded and took the suspect into custody. By pinging Island's cell phone, they were able to determine he was inside an adjacent apartment building, where after several hours, he was arrested without incident. He lived in the building where the shooting happened.

Island is being charged with two counts each of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Island was only recently out of federal prison after being sentenced to 15 years.
