Snake caught trying to break into Wesley Chapel home

A Wesley Chapel man was watching the rains from Hurricane Hermine when he saw something from the corner of his eye.

A snake was trying to get away from rising waters and into Kevin Whitton's house, but rather than back away, Whitton pulled out his phone and began recording as he grabbed it away from the door.

Whitton said he was sitting on the steps in front of his house and saw something from the corner of his eye. He looked over and the snake was right there, at eye level, looking at him. He said it tried to slither up next to his front door.

"He probably would've made it in my house. I had to just grab it," Whitton told FOX 13 News.

Luckily for Whitton - and the snake - he knew just what to do.

"I knew it was a harmless snake the second I saw it. I've been doing this for a long time. I'm pretty experienced," Whitton said. "I was honestly just always around them and I've had some experience at an alligator farm."

He said the snake was a yellow rat snake and are actually good to have around the house because they help with pests. Whitton said yellow rat snakes can be as big as 6 feet long, but this one was much smaller.

Whitton moved the snake to a location safer for everyone involved without incident.
