Police: Taxi driver stabbed in back after delivering passenger

A taxi driver finished taking his passenger to his destination but instead of getting paid, he got severely attacked.

Police say midday Sunday, the driver from All Threes Taxi company was dispatched to the 800 block of N. Markoe Street to pick up a man named "James."

"James" told the driver to take him to the 5800 block of Race Street.

When they got there, the passenger grabbed the driver's neck from behind.

"My first instinct was to just get him off me so I fought with him. As a result of that, he started to stab me," said cab driver Braison Matthews.

Matthews was stabbed seven times in the arm and back.

Surveillance video shows the fight. The attacker got out and was last seen heading north on 58th Street from Race Street.

Matthews spent the night in the hospital but his wounds were only superficial. Today was his first day back at work. He is urging anyone who recognizes the man in this surveillance video to please come forward.

The suspect is described as about 20 years old, short with a thin build. He had a beard and was wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and light-colored pants.

If you recognize him or know where he is, you're asked to call 215-686-TIPS (8477), text a tip to PPDTIP (773847), or click here to submit a tip anonymously. Police say all tips will be confidential.
