Teen fatally struck by car in New Castle

New Castle, Del. (WTXF) Delaware State Police are investigating an accident where a 14-year-old boy was struck and killed by a car this afternoon.

The incident happened just before 3p.m. on the 200 block of N. Dupont Highway where he was struck by one vehicle. The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene of the accident and called police. The driver was not injured. The victim was transported to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he later died from his injuries.

Police say the student darted into traffic and was hit instantly. Three other students were present at the time of the accident. Those other students were not injured in the accident. It was determined in the investigation that the teens tried crossing the road one-quarter mile from a pedestrian footbridge that crosses the roadway and they did not cross at a crosswalk.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor and charges are not expected to be filed.

The Colonial School District did not release the identification of the vicitm, but identified him as a 14 year old student from George Read Middle School. Counselors will be at George Read Middle School Thursday morning for students.
