The Discovery Center opens in Fairmount Park

Families were on hand to test out and try new experiences at The Discovery Center Saturday.

The Discovery Center, the new home of the Philadelphia Outward Bound School and Audubon Pennsylvania, welcomed families for opening weekend festivities.

Nature was on full display as kids were able to learn about and see owls up close, as well as discover many of the different birds that migrate to the Philadelphia area.

The Discovery Center is the first joint venture between Audubon Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Outward Bound School. The goal is to expand educational opportunities concerning the natural world to the surrounding neighborhoods in Philadelphia.

According to Audubon Pennsylvania, the reservoir was used as a part of Philadelphia's drinking water until the early 1970's. Once the reservoir was closed for drinking water purposes, birds then began to migrate to the reservoir, because it's a secluded spot. "Migratory bird species, hundreds of them, and species we don't see elsewhere in the Philadelphia area stop here in their north south migration," said Greg Goldman, Executive Director of Audubon Pennsylvania and Vice President with the National Audubon Society.
