Trial for man charged with wounding officer during standoff, exactly a year ago

- A trial is expected to begin for the man charged with wounding a police officer during a standoff at an apartment building, exactly a year ago.

Norwood police say 37-year-old Darrel Burt fired two shots at Ridley Park Officer Marc Hanley, who responded early Aug. 30, 2015 to a report that Burt was threatening to kill himself.

One bullet hit the officer in the leg and the other in the bulletproof vest covering his chest, which the officer credits for saving his life.

Police returned fire and wounded Burt in the elbow.

Burt's attorney is hoping to use a diminished capacity defense, arguing his actions were spurred by post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and alcohol abuse.

Burt faces attempted homicide and other charges in the Delaware County trial scheduled for Tuesday.
