Vet removes fishing hook from dog's snout

Lulu the dog found herself in some trouble after digging through a bag of fishing lures.

LuLu found a bag of fishing lures while her owner was in the shower. The fishing lures were in their packaging. When the owner got out of the shower she found Lulu struggling with a fishing lure attached to her face.

Her owner took Lulu to Mt. Airy Animal Hospital and after an initial exam, Dr. Lauderdale found that Lulu had been snagged by treble hooks on top of her nose and in the corner of her mouth.

Treble hooks consist of 3 hooks together with one eye. She was administered medication for pain control and sedation. Due to the severity and location of the snags, Dr. Lauderdale determined that general anesthesia would be required to safely remove the hooks without a struggle.

Under anesthesia, Dr. Lauderdale and a team of technicians removed two hooks from Lulu's nose and two hooks from the left corner of her mouth by cutting them mid shank and pushing the barb through the skin.

A third wound was found under Lulu's tongue were she had snagged but the hook had pulled out.

Lulu is expected to make a full recovery.

This is the second fish hook case the hospital has seen in the past four months.
