VP candidate Tim Kaine making N. Phila. ‘pop up campaign stop'

- There’s a special guest making a surprise visit to a North Philadelphia school.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine is spending Thursday morning at Spring Garden Elementary, at 11th and Melon streets.

The campaign is calling this a “pop up campaign stop” so there aren’t many people there, since they didn’t get an announcement.

Organizers say the purpose is an American Federation of Teachers/National Educational Association “partner event to support public education. Parents, students and educators gathered outside of their schools before the bell to hold a rally and march. Similar events are being held in 33 other cities today.”

Hillary Clinton's running mate was already due in Philadelphia, to speak at the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 19 Hall at 6pm. Before that, he's scheduled to be in Pittsburgh to speak at Carnegie Mellon University at about 2:15pm.

Donald Trump's Republican running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, will be in Johnstown for a rally at JWF Industries at 6pm Thursday.

The appearances by the nation's vice presidential candidates are the first for both in Pennsylvania since Tuesday night's vice presidential debate.

The Keystone State will be a major battleground in next month’s election.
