Wind spreads group home fire in both directions, making 3 fires

- An overnight fire at a Gloucester County group home has been very difficult to fight.

High wind spread the flames to neighboring homes on both sides, and it’s still burning at two alarms.

FOX 29’s Lauren Johnson is at the scene in the 700 block of Mehorter Boulevard in Woodbury. She reports the fire at the group home owned by a local church started at 4am.

Then, it spread to the home next door which was abandoned because it has been on sale for months.

After that, the fire spread in the opposite direction, burning two cars and the house on that side.

That made not one, but three fires for the 75 to 100 crews at the scene. They have 30 pieces of fire equipment there to use.

Woodbury fire chief Randall Gartner described the intense battle due to the wind. He said embers the size of Frisbees blew across the street into neighbors’ yards, and crews arrived to find those neighbors in their yards in the dark and cold, carrying hoses .

Six people inside the home were taken to the hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

For now, the firefight continues and power has been cut off at the end of the street.
