Eagles' new starting QB: rookie Carson Wentz

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF/AP) - Eagles coach Doug Pederson announced Carson Wentz will be the team's starting quarterback.

Many people had speculated the rookie Wentz would be the starter if he's healthy, since the Eagles traded quarterback Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday.

The Eagles had traded a slew of picks to select Wentz as the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, but he was slated to be the No. 3 quarterback, long before injuring his ribs in the preseason opener and missing the last three preseason games.

The coach just spoke at an 11:30am news conference, and the big question was who his starting QB will be when the team opens its season against Cleveland on Sunday.

The 6-foot-5 Wentz led the North Dakota State Bison to their fifth consecutive FCS title last season. He passed for 1,651 yards and 17 touchdowns during his senior year that was shortened by a wrist injury. Wentz only started his final two seasons and didn't face big-time competition.

Wentz is the first quarterback from North Dakota State selected in the draft. He's the first quarterback chosen by the Eagles in the first round since 1999, when Andy Reid took Donovan McNabb at No. 2 overall.

The Eagles paid a steep price for Wentz, giving Cleveland the eighth overall pick, a third-round pick (No. 77), a fourth-rounder (No. 100), plus a first-rounder in 2017 and a second-rounder in 2018 for the second pick and a fourth-rounder in 2017.

Backup Chase Daniel will stay backup quarterback. He signed a three-year, $21 million contract in the offseason to play behind Bradford and Wentz.

The Eagles got a first round pick in 2017 and a fourth rounder in 2018 from the Vikings for Bradford.
