PHILADELPHIA (FOX 29) - Current and former Philadelphia Eagles players have taken to social media to defend their franchise quarterback after a report cited sources in painting Carson Wentz as “selfish” and “uncompromising.”
The report from Joseph Santoliquito, appeared on PhillyVoice.com Monday morning and cited a number of anonymous sources, including more than half a dozen players and others close to the team.
After taking a look at the relationship between Wentz and backup quarterback Nick Foles, Santoliquito’s report claims that Wentz isn’t as "universally loved" in the locker room as Foles, the reigning Super Bowl MVP.
In the report, the sources are said to have described Wentz as “selfish” and “uncompromising,” among other things.
“His aw-shucks, overgrown-Opie-from-Mayberry routine plays well with the local and national media. Indeed, sources describe Wentz as ‘incredibly hard-working,’ ‘determined,’ and ‘highly intelligent.’ But the true Wentz is more nuanced and complicated, with sources describing him as ‘selfish,’ ‘uncompromising,’ ‘egotistical,’ one who plays ‘favorites’ and doesn’t like to be ‘questioned,’ one who needs to ‘practice what he preaches’ and fails ‘to take accountability,’” Santoliquito writes.
According to a number of those sources, Wentz was at one point “verbally attacked by a highly respected for not being a ‘team guy.’”
After the report surfaced, a number of Wentz’s current teammates and even some former teammates took to social media to defend their quarterback and question the claims made.
Reading through this Carson Wentz thing and as a leader on this team none of that is true Carson is a great teammate and great player we are all behind him 100% he’s our guy and will come back and prove the world wrong. “Reading through this Carson Wentz thing and as a leader on this team none of that is true Carson is a great teammate and great player we are all behind him 100% he’s our guy and will come back and prove the world wrong,” a tweet from Pro Bowl defensive tackle Fletcher Cox read in part.
“I’m around Carson arguably more than anybody on the team and I feel obligated to say how false and simply wrong the claims made about him are,” wrote backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld, “Carson is one of the best leaders and teammates I’ve been around in my years playing football.”
Wide receiver Torrey Smith, who spent last season with the Eagles, also tweeted the article saying, “Don’t even have to read this article and I bet my new born [sic] child 99% of this is [emoji].”

Don’t believe everything you read!!! Carson has been nothing but a GREAT person, GREAT teammate and GREAT leader since Day 1. Our locker room stands behind him all the way. We can’t wait to get back to work and be the best team we can be in 2019! #FlyEaglesFly— Zach Ertz (@ZERTZ_86) January 21, 2019
