Eagles win battle of the birds over Falcons, 24-15

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - No more than a touchdown and extra point separated the Philadelphia Eagles and visiting Atlanta Falcons until the last two minutes of their matchup in South Philadelphia. Luckily, when it was all over, the Eagles won by nine, 24-15.

The Eagles took the first lead, with Ryan Mathews scoring a touchdown late in the first quarter. The Eagles were up 7-0 to end the first.

Then, they missed a field goal near the start of the second quarter, but Atlanta's Matt Bryant kicked a three-pointer to put the Falcons on the board, and then another. Still, the Eagles kept a 7-6 lead with less than three minutes to go in the first half.

After that, it looked like trouble but the Eagles held onto the ball after what looked like a Darren Sproles fumble. The ruling was overturned upon review.

At halftime, the Eagles led the Falcons, 7-6.

Some first half numbers:

-- Ryan Mathews: 9 carries, 56 yards, TD
-- Jordan Matthews: 5 catches, 75 yards

In the third quarter, Sproles joined Eric Metcalf as the only players in NFL history to record 500+ receptions, 500+ rush attempts and 500+ returns.

The Eagles' Sturgis scored another field goal in the middle of the third, putting Philadelphia ahead 10-6.

Then, it was the Falcons' turn for a field goal, and they turned it into a one-point game, 10-9, with less than five minutes left in the third.

The Eagles missed an opportunity at the end of the quarter. They had been first down and goal, but couldn't score, ending the third leading 10-9.

But Sturgis hit again in the fourth, and the Eagles took a 13-9 lead.

Soon after, the Falcons struck quickly for a long TD, but missed the extra point. Still, they went ahead, 15-13.

The Eagles' Ryan Mathews scored touchdown and the Eagles seemed to miss a two-point conversion. Instead, the Falcons had a holding penalty, so the Eagles succeeded and went up 21-15.

Then Sturgis scored a field goal just before the two-minute warning, getting our birds a nine-point and therefore two-score lead, 24-15.

The Eagles' Leodis McKelvin made an interception with less than a minute and a half left, cementing their 24-15 win.

The Eagles had dropped their past three games to the Falcons.

Now, Philadelphia has a 5-4 record and Atlanta's fell to 6-4.
