Mickey Morandini Returns to Phillies as First Base Coach

PHILADELPHIA- WTXF - He was a beloved Phillie who played several years for the club and was starting second baseman on the famed 1993 team that reached the World Series. Now, Mickey Morandini will once again wear a Philadelphia Phillies uniform.

Morandini was named the team's new first base coach on Monday, following a five-year stint working in the team's minor league system.

The 49-year-old Morandini played in the majors from 1990 to 2000, coming up with the Phillies and returning to the club his final season after a stint with the Chicago Cubs. In addition to his World Series appearance, Morandini is known for having turned a rare unassisted triple play for the Phillies in 1992.

Morandini was a coach for the team's minor-league affiliates in Lehigh Valley and Reading the last two seasons and with the Phillies embracing a youth movement, will likely find himself coaching many of his past minor league charges.

The Phillies' first base coach this past season, Juan Samuel, will switch to third base in 2016.
