Winter storm could snarl NJ commute, governor warns

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says the latest round of winter weather could make a mess of the afternoon commute.

The Democratic governor delivered a storm update Wednesday at the state police intelligence center.

He suggested workers leave early if possible to ease what could be a rough commute as snow is expected to turn into a wintry mix in time for the evening rush hour.

The state pretreated roadways and prepositioned tow trucks. A state of emergency took effect in New Jersey at 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Most of New Jersey is under a winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service. Many schools canceled classes or held early dismissals.

The snow that started late Wednesday morning should eventually turn to rain by early Wednesday night.
