A 7-year-old girl is recovering after being shot while sitting in a car in North Philadelphia. Here's what we know.
PHILADELPHIA - A 7-year-old girl suffered a broken arm when police say she was struck by gunfire while riding in the backseat of her mom's car on Tuesday night.
What we know:
Luis Zeledon's granddaughter, 7-year-old Azuri Ford, was in the backseat of her mother's Honda when a shooter opened fire on the car.
The incident happened just after 7:00 p.m. Tuesday on the 3000 block of North Marshall Street.
The shooter, described as a male on foot, fired six shots, hitting the vehicle three times.
Two bullets struck the driver's rear side, with one bullet going through the door and hitting Azuri in the left arm, said Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police.
Azuri was quickly taken to Temple University Hospital, where doctors confirmed the bullet went through her arm, breaking it.
Fortunately, she is expected to recover, said Small.
Dig deeper:
Luis Zeledon shared that his daughter called him in a panic shortly after leaving his house, informing him that Azuri had been hit.
Initially, he thought it was a car accident, but later learned it was a shooting.
Zeledon expressed his shock and frustration, saying, "The city should do a better job of getting guns off the street because this is the result."
What they're saying:
Zeledon recounted the terrifying moment when his daughter Amanda's car, riddled with bullet holes, was surrounded by police and crime scene tape.
His other daughter, Angelina, was with Azuri and jumped into the backseat to apply pressure to Azuri's wounded arm.
Reflecting on the incident, Zeledon said, "It could have been a lot worse."
Zeledon, who has lived in the area since 1986, expressed how commonplace such events have become, saying, "This is everyday what we deal with
