Man accused of trying to run over police officer under arrest

WILLISTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA (WTXF) - The man accused of trying to run over a Willistown Township police officer in a stolen car is now off the street.

Wednesday, Willistown police told FOX 29's Karen Hepp they arrested Tyrell Winchester.

Investigators learned he was in Center City Philadelphia and they found him walking westbound on Market Street from 18th, at about noon.

Philadelphia police and members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tried to stop Winchester and he tried to run away, but authorities quickly surrounded him.

He was arrested after a brief struggle and marshals turned him over to Willistown police detectives.

Police said last Thursday, he was in a car that was stolen from Lower Merion and got stopped for traffic violations in Willistown.

That's when police say officers approached, Winchester put his vehicle in reverse and rammed a police cruiser multiple times before driving away from the scene.

The officer was not injured.

Winchester then allegedly crashed into trees off West Chester Pike near Ridley Creek Park, and took off into the woods.

Winchester was wanted for attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Police say his criminal history includes arrests for stolen vehicles, thefts, burglary, fleeing to elude police, resisting arrest and aggravated assault.
