Man acquitted of almost all counts in shooting officer

MEDIA, Pa. (AP) - A man who argued self-defense in the shooting of a police officer has been acquitted of nearly all charges.

The Delaware County Daily Times reports Darrel Burt, 37, was convicted Friday in Delaware County of recklessly endangering a civilian.

But Burt was acquitted of a dozen other counts, including attempted murder of police officers, attempted voluntary manslaughter and assaulting an officer by discharging a firearm.

Police said he fired two shots at a Ridley Park officer responding to an August 2015 report that he had threatened to kill himself.

Defense attorney Wana Saadzoi asked three officers whether they announced their presence. All said they didn't recall having done so.

Burt said he didn't see the uniformed officers and wouldn't have fired had he known they were there.
